ACCC approves Qantas AA alliance

Company News

The ACCC has approved the alliance between Qantas Airways Limited (ASX:QAN) and American Airlines.

The deal will see the two airlines co-ordinate services between the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The ACCC says they don’t consider the joint business agreement to have any anti-competitive effects, as the airlines do not currently provide any overlapping direct services on the trans-Pacific routes, adding that the deal may even result in lower fares.

The airlines’ application is also before the New Zealand Minister of Transport and the US Department of Transportation.

In the 2011 financial year Qantas reported a net profit of $249 million.
