Rio appoints British banker to board

Global miner Rio Tinto Ltd (ASX:RIO) has appointed John Varley to its UK and Australian board as a non-executive director to start in September.

Mr Varley is a former CEO of UK-listed global financial services provider Barclays where he worked for 28 years and remains as a senior advisor.

My Varley is also a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore and a non-executive director at AstraZeneca plc and BlackRock Inc.

According to The Australian, Rio has been on the hunt for a non-executive director with strong experience in financial markets following the departure of David Mayhew and David Clementi in 2010.

In the 2010 financial year Rio Tinto recorded a net profit of $14.9 billion.
