BHP reports fatality at Port Hedland

BHP Billiton Ltd (ASX:BHP) has reported a fatality as a result of "a significant incident" at its Port Hedland port facility in Western Australia.

The global miner says the incident occurred just after midnight this morning and that port and rail operations have been suspended until further notice.

BHP has established an information line and says it will provide more details about the incident as soon as possible throughout today.

Emergency teams have been activated and police are attending the scene.

BHP reported a net profit of $10.5 billion in the second half of 2010.
