Retailers call for carbon tax clarity

Company News

Wesfarmers Ltd’s (ASX:WES) owned chains Bunnings and Coles are among the companies who have called on the Federal Government to detail the proposed carbon tax.

Amid increasing pressures on the retail sector, David Jones Ltd (ASX:DJS) and Woolworths Ltd (ASX:WOW) have also voiced concern that weak consumer sentiment is being hit further by a lack of certainty over the tax.

A retail conference held yesterday in Sydney brought to light that the big retailers have not as yet been consulted by the government.

Woolworths chief executive-elect Grant O'Brien said until further details are made available, companies will be prevented from effectively preparing for the impact of the tax.

Wesfarmers reported a net profit of $1.2 billion in the first half of the 2011 financial year.
