BHP (ASX:BHP) has today announced it intends to defend a class action claim over the Samarco dam failure of 2015.

The mining giant has confirmed it has been served with a class action proceeding filed in the Federal Court of Australia in Victoria.

Fairfax media today reported about 3000 investors have signed up to participate in a class action against BHP, that alleges the miner breached disclosure obligations and engaged in misleading and deceptive conduct.

The mining disaster occurred in 2015 when a dam burst, killing 19 people and destroying several Brazilian communities.

Shares in BHP (ASX:BHP) are trading 1.19 per cent lower at $32.52
