Qantas, Virgin cut flights due to ash

Company News

Qantas Airways (ASX:QAN) and Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd (ASX:VBA) have been forced to again cancel domestic flights in the wake of more volcanic ash from a Chilean volcano.

Qantas and its budget arm Jetstar, Virgin, and Tiger have all suspended services in and out of Adelaide.

Qantas has also just announced on its Twitter page that it will suspend all Sydney and Canberra flights from later today and is unsure when normal services will resume.

A Qantas spokesperson told ABC radio there will continue to be a risk until the volcano settles down and stops pumping ash.

Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre meteorologist Tristan King has confirmed that there is a risk that the volcanic ash will pass over Melbourne.

In the last half of 2010 calendar year Qantas Airways reported an interim net profit of $239 million.
