BHP braces for strikes

Company News

BHP Billiton Ltd (ASX:BHP) is bracing for possible strikes next week at seven of its Queensland coalmines.

Unions are said to be consolidating their role before commencing negotiations. The result to strike or not – cast by secret ballots of 4000 workers, will be announced today. If the strike is approved, unions will need to give three days notice before industrial action is taken.

Talks between mining unions and the company have to date been deadlocked.

In the first six months of its 2011 financial year BHP Billiton generated a net profit of $10.5 billion.
