Lynas Corporation Ltd’s (ASX:LYC) Advanced Materials Plant in Malaysia is being investigated by United Nations nuclear experts, according to The Associated Press.
The rare earths refinery currently under construction is reportedly being examined by the International Atomic Energy Agency to determine if it poses a threat of radioactive pollution.
Earlier this month Lynas said an independent review into health, safety and environmental aspects of the plant was underway.
However, the plant has attracted intense criticism and protests from Malaysian locals and politicians who are concerned the plant will produce radioactive waste.
The Associated Press reports that Malaysian authorities will next month rule on whether or not to allow Lynas to proceed with refining ore from Western Australia.
Lynas Corporation recorded a $20.5 million net loss in the last half of 2010.
