Wesfarmers Ltd (ASX:WES) owned Coles has fired up plans to boost its online sales by proposing to make its 620 petrol station stores pick-up points for customers who buy goods online.
According to the Australian Financial Review, Coles has already piloted the scheme that enables its customers to purchase the supermarket’s entire line of products online and collect them at Coles Express petrol stations.
Coles general manager for online, Keith Louie, has told the paper that the Click and Collect concept could significantly change the way people shop, while also reducing checkout congestion and opening the store for people who want service.
Coles online division doubled its sales from the 2009 to 2010 financial year and is expecting double digit growth this year.
In the first six months of the 2011 financial year, Wesfarmers booked a net profit of $1.2 billion.
