Qantas again hikes domestic fares

Company News

Qantas Airways (ASX:QAN) has hiked the price of its domestic fares for the second time this year in response to rising fuel prices.

The airline says ticket prices for domestic and regional flights will increase by up to $10 per sector, while trips across the Tasman will see increases of up to 8 per cent from April 2011.

Qantas advises since international fuel charges and domestic fares were raised last month jet fuel prices have climbed by a further 15 per cent to $US134 a barrel.

CEO Alan Joyce says the current fuel crisis presents a significant threat to airlines in Australia and around the world, with Qantas’ own fuel costs likely to reach $2 billion in the second half of the current financial year.

The airline has cautioned that it cannot rule out further increases in surcharges and fares in the future.

For the half year ended on 31 December 2010, Qantas generated a net profit of $239 million.
