Wall Street bounces back: Aus shares to rally

Market Reports

by Jessica Amir

On Wall Street, US stocks bounced back after President Donald Trump supported a debt limit extension.

The three major indices all gained around 0.3 per cent, fueled by gains in energy and consumer discretionary. Tech giants like Facebook and Netflix also regained their foot holds.

On the commodity front, the post-Hurricane Harvey rally is continuing with US crude prices rising to a 4-week high, while Gold is falling away from its 1 year peak on the back of markets strengthening their muscles.

Taking all of that into consideration, the Australian share market is set to lift at the open.

US economic news

The international trade numbers showed the US trade deficit rose 0.3 per cent in July to $43.7 billion. It was below the expected $44.7 billion, as exports and imports fell.

In good news for the nation, the ISM non-manufacturing index rebounded to 55.3 in August, in line with expectations, bouncing up from an 11-month low in July.

And the Federal Reserve’s Beige booked noted the US economy expanded at a modest, to moderate pace from July to mid-August.

The ABS will report International trade for July, including exports and imports, with expectations we should see a $900 million surplus.

We will also get a health check on retail trade for July, with forecasts of 0.3 per cent growth, on par with June.
