AGL Energy (ASX:AGL) is quashing media commentary, saying it has made no commitment to sell its Liddell coal fired power station in NSW or extend it beyond 2022.

Despite comments made by Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull yesterday, the energy company says it’s committed to closing the power station in 2022 and that will be the end of its operational life.

The electricity, gas, solar and energy provider says it provided advanced notice to the market in early 2015 about its intention with Liddell, all so it would avoid the sudden exit from the coal power station market.

It comes as the Australian government expressed concerns about the energy market post 2022, following the Australian Energy Market Operator’s 2017 Statement of Opportunities published yesterday.

The energy giant it will continue to assess what is needed post 2022 to replace Liddell.

Shares in AGL Energy (ASX:AGL) are trading 0.63 per cent lower to $23.50.
