South32 Limited (ASX:S32) says it withdrew its workforce from its Appin mine in the southern coalfields of New South Wales on Wednesday 28 June 2017.

The mining and metals company, which operates in Australia, South Africa and South America withdrew its workers from its Appin site as ‘precautionary measure’ while it works with the regulator to address issues at the site.

South32 says it subsequently confirmed that there was no gas ‘exceedance’ or breach of gas limits at the mine.

The company notified the New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment of the details about withdrawing its staff from Appin.

The regulator then issued a prohibition notice, expressing broader concern about the recent gas ‘exceedance’ events, as well the miner’s operating practices at its Illawarra Metallurgical Coal operation.

Shares in South32 Limited (ASX:S32) are trading 1.09 per cent lower to $2.73.
