Rio Tinto Limited (ASX:RIO) has announced its Chairman, Jan du Plessis will retire, after serving as chair for over eight years.

Jan du Plessis will become the chairman of UK telco, BT Group (LON:BT.A), effective from 1 November 2017.

His successor, at the metals and mining giant, is expected to be announced before the end of the year (2017). He will also continue as Chairman, by no later than the company's 2018 annual general meeting.

Jan du Plessis says his announcement is also part of a planned leadership transition.

Despite the commodity price volatility and challenging conditions, Mr du Plessis was able to deliver robust balance sheets for the group.

RIO Tinto Limited (ASX:RIO) reported US$4.6 billion net profit for full 2016 year.
