IT services provider, Empired Ltd (ASX:EPD), has been picked as a subcontractor to supply cloud based information and communications technology (ICT) to the Western Australian government.

Back in January, the WA government signed contracts for a $3 billion technology overhaul, known as the ‘GovNext-ICT Program’. This will involve more than 60 state government data centres and server rooms being consolidated, and the roll-out of a whole of government data and communications network.

The state signed five-year contracts with Atos, Datacom and NEC, and the state expects to save $650 million in IT costs over 10 years. There is also an option for the state to extend the contract by an additional 5 years.

Empired says it will have an exclusive role within the scope of the contract, as part of the NEC Consortium, to provide core collaboration functions in a cloud environment across the whole WA government.
