Origin Energy Ltd
(ASX:ORG) is expected to emerge in a stronger position in New South Wales’ electricity and gas markets as the state’s power industry plans privatisation.
Australia’s competition regulator has announced that it would not block acquisitions proposed by either Origin or AGL Energy, removing the last hurdle to privatisation.
Origin remains a frontrunner to acquire EnergyAustralia and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has given company permission to acquire Integral Energy and Country Energy, the smaller of the three retailers being sold.
For the year ended 30 June 2010, Origin reported a net profit of $680 million.
