Wesfarmers Ltd’s
(ASX:WES) chairman Bob Every is targeting gender balance on the company’s board.
Dr Every says women comprise of 50 per cent of the population and should have appropriate representation on company boards.
The comments came at the retailing giant’s annual general meeting, Dr Every adding that diversity is an important element in Wesfarmers' nomination process and board renewal is continuing, directed at securing highly talented and well-experienced directors.
Wesfarmers' gender target follows a similar announcement from Westpac Banking Corporation’s (ASX:WBC) CEO Gail Kelly last month. The bank is aiming to increase the number of females in its top roles to 40 per cent over the next four years.
Wesfarmers booked a $1.56 billion net profit in the 2010 financial year.
