Shareholders question News Corp donations

Company News

News Corporation (ASX:NWS) shareholders have questioned their chief executive Rupert Murdoch, over the way in which political donations are carried out, Reuters reports.

According to the source News Corp directors have also been asked to explain the company’s recent $1 million donation to both the Republican Governors Association and US Chamber of Commerce.

Mr Murdoch allegedly responded with claims that the donation was made in the best interest of the company.

However Reuters says that shareholder activist groups have blasted the donations branding them as troubling.

The questions were raised at News Corp's annual general meeting last week, Reuters reporting that the funds were gifted by News Crop in the lead up to US congressional mid-term elections on 2 November.

News Corporation reported a profit of $3.1 billion in the 2010 financial year.
