Qantas passenger numbers up in May

Company News

Qantas Airways Ltd (ASX:QAN) says overall passenger numbers for the Qantas group increased by 5.6% in May compared to last year.

The Qantas group includes Qantas Domestic, QantasLink, Jetstar Domestic, Qantas International, Jetstar International and Jetstar Asia.

For the financial year to May, numbers of travellers increased 7.6% from the previous year.

Total domestic yield excluding foreign exchange for the financial year to May, dropped 3.4% compared to the same time last year, with total international yield down 12.2% on last year.

The airline says increased competition continues in the low-fare aviation market.

The premium market, including the business travel market, continues to demonstrate the positive effect of the company's portfolio strategy, says Qantas.

The company also says it has hedged 50% of its fuel requirement in 2010/2011 at a worst case scenario of US$90 per barrel including option premium.

At current rates, Qantas says it has 84% participation in falling oil prices for the year.

Earlier this month Qantas announced the appointment of Gareth Evans as Chief Financial Officer for the Qantas Group.

Qantas profit for the 2009 fiscal year came to $117 million, a far cry from its result the year before.
