Amcor (ASX:AMC) closes another plant

Company News

Amcor (ASX:AMC) will close a pharmaceutical packaging plant in the US in November, making it the second such closure since the company’s $2.1 billion acquisition of Alcan Packaging’s operations.

The closure of the Pennsylvania plant will result in the loss of around 100 jobs.

The Australian Financial Review reports that more plant closures are likely as Amcor seeks to extract more than $200 million in cost savings and productivity benefits from the acquisition of Alcan flexible tobacco and pharmaceutical packaging assets last year.

Amcor has also won US Justice Department approval to buy Alcan Packaging’s medical flexible business.

In the year to June 30 2009, Amcor posted a $211 million net profit.
