MAp Group (ASX:MAP) says impact of European flight bans unknown

Company News

MAp Group (ASX:MAP) says it is not yet possible to estimate the impact of the situation resulting from the cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland.

The airport owner says air traffic control and safety authorities are regularly reviewing airspace conditions but at this stage it is unclear when normal operations will be resumed.

Both Brussels and Copenhagen airports have been closed to all inbound and outbound traffic since the evening of April 15.

MAp says daily traffic amounts to 50,000 to 60,000 passengers at each of Brussels and Copenhagen airports.

The company says mitigating actions have been implemented at the European airports to reduce the financial impact of the closures, for example by rescheduling costly night-time construction and maintenance work for daylight hours.

Meanwhile MAp Group says Sydney Airport experienced a 10.5% increase in passenger numbers in the March quarter, with traffic at Copenhagen airport jumping 17.2% for the period.

Passenger numbers rose 1.4% at Brussels Airport for the three months to March, which was impacted by the British Airways strike.

MAp Group reported a $572.7 million loss for 2009.
