Perth-based shipmaker, Austal Ltd
(ASX:ASB), has delivered its latest combat vessel to the US Navy at a ceremony held aboard the ship at the company’s Alabama shipyard.
The USS Gabrielle Giffords (or LCS 10) is the fifth high-speed vessel built by the company since 2009, and is is designed to navigate in shallow coastal regions.
It was named after Gabrielle Giffords, a former Arizona congresswoman who was shot in the head during an assassination attempt in 2011, but survived.
Austal is building six additional Littoral Combat Ships under an 11-ship contract worth around $US4 billion.
Austal reported a net loss of $84.2 million at 30 June 2016.
