Company News

Iron ore miner Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (ASX:FMG) has reportedly been told it needs to review safety at its mines.

According to the Australian Associated Press, Western Australia’s state mining engineer Simon Ridge has told the company it needs to get an independent engineering review after three major incidents occurred in the past month.

AAP reports Mr Ridge saying that while the recent incidents have not resulted in any deaths or injury, it is extremely important to identify all factors involved to ensure there are no similar incidents that could result in adverse consequences.

The department’s Resources Safety Mines inspectors are conducting an investigation into one incident that occurred on Saturday where a light vehicle was crushed after a truck drove over it.

Fortescue Metals Group reported net profit after tax for the 12 months to June 30, 2009 of $626.13 million.
