Life science company, Medlab Clinical Ltd (ASX:MDC) has been granted a licence to import cannabis by the Department of Health and Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Medlab says this is a critical step towards stating a clinical trial using cannabis for patients suffering from intractable cancer pain.

Medlab’s managing director, Sean Hall, says the granting of this licence means his company can look to begin manufacturing NanoCelle Cannabis, which is a cannabis formulation (in nano-sized particles) which can be taken orally.

The company says it will import the proprietary cannabis blend from Aphria Inc, a licenced producer based in Canada.

Medlab posted a net loss of $3.7 million at 30 June 2016.
