Back in black: Aus shares surge 0.68% at noon

So far, today’s trading session is has been the complete opposite of yesterday’s session. The Australian share market jumped at the open and has managed to keep up that momentum. Right now, the local index is tracking 0.68% higher at noon.

There’s been strong demand this morning for blue chip stocks – such as Aconex (which posted a positive quarterly update), Woolworths and Wesfarmers. Doing particularly well today are Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), which are among today’s start performers.

However, the Energy sector isn’t doing so well, due to a fall in oil prices overnight.

The S&P/ASX 200 is 36 points up at 5,445. On the futures market the SPI is 32 points higher.

Company news

Automotive Holdings Group (ASX:AHG) has been receiving expressions of interest to for its Refrigerated Logistics business. However, AHG is currently in the process of restructuring that business, and hasn’t initiated a formal sale process yet. AHG says that none of these expressions of interest have progressed beyond informal, preliminary discussions. Shares in Automotive Holdings are trading up 3.78 per cent at $4.12.

DEXUS Property Group (ASX:DXS) has given an operational update for the September quarter. The Group leases almost 55,000 square metres of office space across 78 transactions, with a 96% occupancy rate. DEXUS also says it leased almost 159,000 square metres of industrial space in the quarter, with occupancy improving to 92.3%. Shares in DEXUS are trading up 1.71 per cent at $8.94.

Best and worst performers

The best performing sector is REITs, gaining 1.34 per cent to 1,347. Shares in Stockland are up 2.58 per cent and are trading at $4.57. Shares in Cromwell Group and BWP Trust are also stronger.

The worst performing sector is Energy, falling 0.18 per cent to 8,458. Shares in Worley Parsons have fallen by 0.76 per cent, and are trading at $9.09. Shares in Caltex and Woodside Petroleum are also lower.

Gold and the dollar

Gold is trading at $US1,263 an ounce.
The Australian dollar is buying $US0.7605.
