AGL Energy Limited (ASX:AG) has posted a statutory loss after tax of $449 million in the six months to 31 December, versus a profit of $308 million a year earlier.
The results accounted for a $656 million impairment charge – flagged by the company last week - against its gas exploration and production assets.
Underlying earnings rose 24.2 per cent to $375 million according to the half year results.
AGL said its full year underlying profit would be within the upper half of a guidance range of $650 to $720 million, pending normal trading conditions for the remainder of the year.
AGL said it would pay an interim dividend of 32 cents.
