Outlook: Aus shares set to follow weak leads

The Australian share market looks set to begin its last trading week of the year lower, following weak leads by Wall Street. Several international stock markets were closed on Monday, allowing renewed falls in oil to drag on energy stocks in thin trade.

Wall Street closed lower yesterday: The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.1 per cent to close at 17,528, the S&P 500 lost 0.2 per cent to close at 2,057 and the NASDAQ lost 0.15 per cent to close at 5,041.
 
European markets closed lower: London’s FTSE was closed, Paris lost 1.0 per cent and Frankfurt lost 0.7 per cent.
 
Asian markets closed mixed: Tokyo’s Nikkei added 0.6 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng lost 1 per cent, and China’s Shanghai Composite lost 2.6 per cent.
 
The Australian share market last traded 66 points higher at 5,208. On the futures market the SPI is 56 points up. 

Currencies

The Australian Dollar at 8:20AM was buying $US0.7252 cents, 48.74 Pence Sterling, 87.27 Yen and 66.11 Euro cents.
 
Company news
 
Smart Parking Limited (ASX:SP) has executed a contract with Wellington City for the provision of various services including 3,000 parking sensors in the Wellington CBD street parking areas. The company will also provide ongoing parking data to an app and to Wellington City for city operational and management purposes. Shares in Smart Parking last traded at $0.25. 
 
Armour Energy Limited (ASX:AJQ) Executive Chairman Nicholas Mather has advised shareholders to accept a proportional takeover offer by AEGP Australia Pty Limited to acquire 13.62 percent of shares in Armour Energy for a consideration of 25c per share. Mr Mather told investors the offer provides shareholders with continued participation in the company’s performance. Shares in Armour Energy last traded at $0.145.

Silver has lost $0.45 to $13.93 for March.
Copper has lost $0.04 to $2.08 a pound.
Oil has lost $1.38 to $US36.72 a barrel for January light crude in New York.
