Doubts cast over Crown’s Sri Lanka venture

Company News

Doubts have been cast over Crown Resorts Limited (ASX:CWN) plans to expand into Sri Lanka following a government election.

The gaming company was hoping to build a $US400 million casino and hotel with a local joint-venture partner.

However the island nation’s newly elected socially conservative president, Maithripala Sirisena, has vowed to block the bid.

Crown had earlier flagged plans to open the project in 2018 but local opposition has since grown.

Crown Resorts net profit rose to $656 million in the 2014 financial year.
